Kristiansand, Norway, 27 October 2009—A 22 year-old Norwegian man who was attempting to smuggle pythons and albino geckos from Denmark into Norway was arrested after Norwegian Customs officers found the animals taped to his body.
The officers decided to search the man after they spotted a tarantula spider inside one of his bags.
The 14 baby pythons were found taped to his torso inside rolled up socks and the geckos were found taped to his legs inside tins.
According to Helge Breilid, Office Manager at Kristiansand Customs: “Customs officers quickly realized the man was smuggling animals, because his whole body was in constant motion.”
Reptile smuggling is said to be not uncommon in Norway, where the keeping of reptiles as pets is highly restricted. The un-named smuggler now faces a fine of NOK12,500 (USD2,200).
