CI's Law Enforcement Support and Capacity Building in Cambodia and China (2006-2008)

Cambodia:

  • Financial and technical support provided to Cambodia’s Forestry Administration to manage and protect the 402,000-hectare Central Cardamoms Protected Forest in Southwest Cambodia, where poaching and illegal wildlife trade is a primary threat.
  • Trainings will be organized for Cambodian judges and lawyers to raise the profile of the country’s wildlife protection laws and the importance of effective prosecution for wildlife crimes. We will explore the development of wildlife law-focused curriculum for inclusion in mainstream training for judges and prosecutors in Cambodia.
  • Monitor wild populations of heavily traded wildlife and investigate illegal trade networks

China:

  • Species identification tools developed and provided to key enforcement agencies, including E-Shield species identification database www.cnspp.cn, which can be used for free by Chinese enforcement agencies. CI and China’s CITES Management Authority also published the Species Identification Manual for Butterflies and Insects in China, which includes species descriptions and color photos of 172 species of butterflies and insects common in trade in China. The manual will be distributed to key Customs check points.
  • CI will support several enforcement workshops to build the capacity of Chinese enforcement officials to combat the illegal wildlife trade, and with India, Nepal and Southeast Asian countries to promote cooperation on cross-boundary wildlife trafficking.
