CI's Awareness Activities in Cambodia and China (2006-2008)

Cambodia:

  • Publish report on wildlife trade in Cambodia.
  • Raise awareness among local communities living in and around the protected area on reducing hunting of protected species.

China:

  • On June 28th 2007, CI China launched its new Olympic Green Travel and Green Living in China campaign and website, www.chinagreentravel.com to promote green tourism and living in China. One component of this campaign is the promotion of “green consumption”, bringing attention to the fact that as a result of over-consumption of wildlife in restaurants and markets, many of China’s unique animals are threatened with extinction. The website promotes simple consumer choices that can help protect the environment, like purchasing local handicrafts and food, respecting local culture, customs and laws, and carrying reusable bags and containers. The website offers guides to green shopping, parks, information on eco-tourism, and how to make greener choices while living in or visiting China.
  • CI produced a pocket-sized Green Dining Card (English and Chinese versions) that will be widely distributed before and during the Olympics, in major Chinese cities, airports, restaurants and hotels, to raise consumer awareness on which species to avoid eating in restaurants and markets.
  • CI will continue to produce a variety of PSAs, exhibits, green tourism guides and posters and ads in buses, airports and restaurants aimed at reducing wildlife consumption for distribution in major Chinese cities
  • Since 2005, CI has conducted targeted awareness campaigns in 35 communities across 4 provinces in western China to reduce tiger skin use by Tibetan communities on their ceremonial clothing. As a result, most of these communities have stopped wearing furs. We will expand this activity to additional communities in Tibetan areas of western China.
  • Continue periodic consumption surveys to determine how attitudes towards wildlife consumption are shifting as a result of awareness activities.
