Snake smuggler rumbled

This man was arrested after 14 pythons were found wrapped in socks and taped to his torso Click photo to enlarge © Kristiansand Regional Customs Service   Kristiansand, Norway, 27 October 2009—A 22 year-old Norwegian man who was attempting to smuggle pythons and albino geckos from Denmark into Norway was arrested after Norwegian Customs officers found the animals taped to his body.

The officers decided to search the man after they spotted a tarantula spider inside one of his bags.

eBay ivory trader gets 10 months

A selection of ivory artefacts Noonan was convicted of illegally trading through eBay Click photo to enlarge © HRMC   London, UK, 21 October 2009—A man who traded in elephant and whale ivory on eBay was sentenced to 10 months in prison following an international investigation by the UK's HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Nicholas Noonan, 46, of Bedfordshire, UK, pleaded guilty on 5 October 2009 to charges relating to illegal trading in African Elephant tusks and Sperm Whale teeth as well as ivory artefacts. They had been carved into billiard balls or used to make corkscrews before being sold on the commercial website.

Customs and Border Protection cracks egg smuggling attempt

Parrot eggs concealed in a specially made vest Click photo to enlarge © Australian Customs and Border Protection Perth, Australia, 9 September 2009—Customs and Border Protection has cracked its third wildlife smuggling attempt in Western Australia in the last month with the arrest of two men in Perth.

The first man, a 53-year-old Australian, was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle 39 parrot eggs into Australia through Perth International Airport. He was stopped by Customs and Border Protection officers when he arrived in Perth on a flight from Bali on Sunday 6 September.

UK Government takes over CAWT chair

CAWT is a global coalition of six Governments and thirteen international business and conservation organisations, working together to support each other’s efforts to end the illegal trade in wildlife and wildlife products.

CAWT is a partnership of like-minded governments and organisations who are willing to make a political commitment to end wildlife trafficking. When taking on the role of chair the UK pledged to continue the good work already done by the US by building on the initiatives already underway and encouraging new members from key countries and industries to join the coalition.
